It has been a little while since I have written an update post. I just want to provide a brief review of the goings on here at I Might Believe in Faeries.
Hieroglyphics by Arthur Machen (ft. Christopher Tompkins)
On September 15th 2024, I released the newest episode of the podcast. Christopher Tompkins, owner of Darkly Bright Press, came on the show to discuss the literary views of Welsh horror author, Arthur Machen. Why did Machen consider Homer’s Odyssey to be true art, but not Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice? Well, you’ll need to tune in and find out! The link to the episode can be found here.
IMBIF Bookclub
This past October, the IMBIF Bookclub met to discuss A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter Miller Jr. After rereading it for this discussion, A Canticle has become one of my favorite books of all time. If you want mutants, immortals, and bicephalous tomato women, this masterpiece of science fiction is for you. The link to the episode can be found here.
I also wrote a piece on the alchemical symbolism of A Canticle for Leibowitz. What do weasels, mercury, cockatrices have to do with desert monks in a nuclear wasteland? Read it and find out.
The next IMBIF Bookclub book is The Place of the Lion by Charles Williams. This will be my first ever book by Williams, but I am looking forward to reading this forgotten member of The Inklings. The discussion will take place sometime before November 15th, 2024.
Upcoming Episodes
In addition to the upcoming bookclub episode, I have just finished recording an episode with one of the translators for the French Medieval Ovide moralise. Sarah-Jane Murray and I discussed Ovid and the unknown author of the medieval French moralization. That episode will be available on October 15, 2024. The three volume set can be found here. Sarah-Jane and I discuss the reason for the price and that there might be a cheaper, paperback edition in the works.
Sarah-Jane is also with the Greats Story Lab, which has a channel on YouTube. They are currently in the process of promoting a movie on Boethius and making videos about Dante. It is seriously cool stuff and everyone should check them out.
This Halloween, Eleanor Bourg Nicholson is planning on returning to the show to discuss her two most recent books, Brother Wolf and Wake of Malice. I finished Brother Wolf last night and I plan on starting Wake of Malice soon. Both of these books are published at Chrism Press and you should all check them out!
Adventures with YouTube
Over the past few days, I have been trying to learn how to upload audio files to my YouTube channel. I have never done this before, so the learning curve has been steep. I did manage to upload episode 2, Exploring the Dangerous World of Faeries. My plan is to get the rest of them on YouTube and with a video component in future episodes. I may have more exciting news on that front, but that will need to wait until I have more information myself.
I believe that is all I have for now! Thank you for tuning in and remember, be careful out there!
